DR. WALLACE J NICHOLS MEMORIAL & PADDLE OUT
IN MEMORY: Join us July 23, on World Blue Mind Day, when the sanctuary community will paddle out at Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz to celebrate the life of our beloved Foundation Ambassador, Wallace “J” Nichols—a marine scientist, turtle tracker, author of the New York Times bestseller “Blue Mind,” and a champion of ocean wellness.
J taught us that “being near, in, on, or under water can make us happier, healthier, more connected, and better at what we do.”
With his signature gesture—a small blue marble symbolizing our fragile blue planet—he inspired countless people to connect deeply with our oceans. (Photo of J at our 2023 Sea Stars Gala.)
July 23 is also our annual “Get Into Your Sanctuary” day, so it is fitting that hundreds will gather in the water, receive blue marbles, share J’s words, & carry on his legacy. For those unable to paddle, join us along the Municipal Wharf or West Cliff Drive to witness the tribute.
Please share this story and consider bringing your board or just yourself to honor J’s message: “I wish you water.” All are welcome!
Let’s paddle in gratitude, mindful of J’s vision for a world healed and united by water—and continue his mission forward together.
