Wildlife viewing is one of the highlights of any visit to Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, but this can come at a high cost to marine life.  Human interactions can have a negative impact to the health and longevity of many iconic species, such as whales, sea otters, and harbor seals.  In recent years, reported wildlife disturbances, including whale entanglements, have been on the rise due to the popularity of ocean recreation, and an increase in fishing gear and other debris in the nearshore environment along the West Coast.
