TSUNAMIS, EARTHQUAKES, AND KING TIDES - OH MY!
Not even nature’s surprises could stop us from celebrating our sanctuary supporters at our annual holiday event on December 5, 2024! The day started with a bit of drama as a Northern California earthquake triggered a tsunami warning from NOAA, prompting an evacuation from our Foundation offices at the Santa Cruz Harbor and the temporary closure of our venue at the Sanctuary Exploration Center.
Thankfully, the warning was lifted, and we were able to carry on with the festivities as planned. It was a true testament to resilience — and a reminder of the incredible forces that shape our sanctuary!
We gathered at the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Exploration Center, just across from the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, for a festive holiday celebration honoring our dedicated Foundation supporters, community partners, volunteers, and a distinguished group of Santa Cruz’s notable officials.
Guests had the opportunity to engage with NOAA sanctuary staff, who shared insights into the critical research projects and programs they manage — initiatives the Foundation proudly supports through fundraising efforts.
Guests enjoyed a delicious spread provided by Jack O’Neill Restaurant at the Dream Inn, while Mayor Fred Keeley emceed a program featuring special remarks from Secretary Leon Panetta. Adding a touch of fun, scientist Ted Cheeseman gave an engaging presentation on the “local” whales that frequent Monterey Bay. A few lucky donors even had the exclusive chance to name two of those locals and track their journeys along the coast!
The evening concluded with co-chair Hilary Bryant and Chapter Director Ginaia Kelly offering heartfelt thanks to all our supporters and recognizing the incredible contributions that made this year a success.
The generosity of our guests was evident throughout the night, as donations poured in during the fund-a-need segment and silent auction, helping us exceed our fundraising goals for the programs we support. It was a wonderful evening of connection, storytelling, and reflection, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make it such a special occasion.
